REDEvents: KPI Model for social & business events

Summary

Up to recent time the only feedback city administration units and province habitant had was an information in form of human relation of what’s is going on in certain parts of the urban area. Social media and city CCTV monitoring have change this situation substantially, but nevertheless those channels have their limitations, each in their nature. Video monitoring cannot provide wide spread, high definition discrete information and data coming purely from social channels is submitted to subjective statements. What´s more users who urge to have access to adequate information are required to manually filter massive data in a search of useful information. The right way to go in modern society is to upgrade cities and metropolitan areas to Smart Cities status deploying network of sensors in order to provide trust worthy, precise information in real time. Advanced network services are designed to optimize the use of such urban infrastructure. Information extracted from wide variety of deployed sensors can be cross checked and overlaid with other sources, somehow related with each other, in order to extract details or predict impact during certain period of time. There are several indicators that can be obtain in this manner: such as intensity and nature of traffic – for better control traffic (light) or guide users through less crowded places or find the nearest parking spot for disable person. Monitoring of free parking spaces can be used to direct users where there are vacancies and guide away vehicles from streets that have no free parking spaces or have low liberation rate. What´s more, right combination of data coming from other sensors or sources and reasoning can lead to depict results invisible up to that moment.

RedEvents aim to build up on top of the FIESTA-IoT platform by reasoning for the sensors network state. Potentially reviling problematic network areas that could be proactively avoided instead of reactively corrected particularly in priority critical applications. The module in question collects data related to crowd movements, process it for knowledge generation and uses the knowledge to facilitate making informative dashboards of happenings and traffic. There has been experimental investigation undertaken in order to analyse the performance benefits and unique challenges of coordination in complex infrastructure with high quantity of communication nodes such as those published by testbeds. The research team designed experimental scenarios that use RedEvents module and FIESTA-IoT platform to evaluate a set of strategies for testbeds that are going to participate in the close future.
